Description |
Recorded by Ptolemy as a star and
later designated by Bayer as Omega Centauri, this wonderful cluster was
really discovered by Edmund Halley in 1677. Photographs show outlying
stars to 65 arcmins diameter but the main region is about half as much,
still the size of a full moon. Distance: about 16.000 lightyears.
