M 63 es una galaxia espiral descubierta por Pierre Mechain el 14 de junio de 1779 en la constelación de Canes Venatici. Al ser Mechain amigo de Charles Messier, le comunicó rápidamente el descubrimiento y éste último lo incluyó en su catálogo a los pocos días.

Se clasifica como Sb o Sc y pertenece a un grupo de galaxias en las cuales está incluida M 51 como miembro destacado.

Se sitúa dicho grupo a una distancia entre 30 y 37 millones de años luz.

No posee brazos definidos como las grandes espirales M 51, M 100 o M 74, por el contrario tiene un gran número de condensaciones y una estructura exterior muy fragmentada.

Tiene una mg. de 8.6 y unas dimensiones de 10 x 6 arcmin.

La fotografía está tomada con el SC de 280 m.m. y la ST-8 XME a f/10 desde Ayllón (Segovia) el pasado mes de mayo de 2006 y tiene 100 min. de exposición acumulada

M 63, the Sunflower galaxy is a Sb or Sc type spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici. It was discovered by Pierre Mechain the 14 th of june, 1779. Mechain, who was a friend of Charles Messier let him know about his observations very quickly and whithin a few days, the recently discovered fuzzy object became the 63th entry in Messier´s list.

It has not well defined spiral arms like M 51 or M 100, instead it has a lot of condensations, patches and a very fragmented structure.

It belongs to a small group of galaxies at a distance of about 30 to 37 million light years of which M 51 is a prominent member.

It has a mg. 8.6 and extends to 10 x 6 arcmin.

The CCD image was taken with the SCT 11" + ST-8 XME at f/10 from Ayllón ( Segovia).
