M 94 (Ngc 4736) fué descubierta por Pierre Machain el 22 de marzo de 1781 y Charles Messier la añadió a su catálogo dos días más tarde.

La galaxia tiene una parte central muy brillante, luego tiene una zona intermedia con gran cantidad de estrellas en formación y finalmente tiene un halo exterior muy debil que solo es visible en fotografías de larga exposición.

Forma parte de un pequeño grupo de galaxias en el que se encuentra también M 64 y Ngc 5023 y su distancia no se conoce exactamente pero está comprendida entre 15 y 33 millones de años luz.

Su mg. es de 8.2 y su diámetro aparente de 7 x 3 arcmin.

La fotografía se obtuvo con un SC de 280 m.m. a f/10 y una ST-8 XME y la exposición total acumulada fué de 90 min. desde Ayllón en Segovia.

M 94 (Ngc 4736) was discovered by Pierre Mechain the 22nd of march 1781 and Charles Messier after checking the news from his friend added it to his cataloge two days later.

The galaxy has a very bright inner region, an intermediate zone very active in terms of star formation and finally an outer and dim halo only visible in long exposure CCD images.

It belongs to a small group of galaxies to which M 63 and Ngc 5023 are also included and their distance should be comprised between 15 to 33 million light years.

It is a mg. 8.2 spiral galaxy seen at a very steep angle and extends 7 x 3 arcmin.

The photograph was taken through the 11" SCT at f/10 and the ST-8 XME. Total accumulated exposure was about 90 min.
