M 8 o la nebulosa de la Laguna consiste en una agrupación de un cúmulo de estrellas muy jóvenes ( Ngc 6530 ) creado a partir de materia de la nebulosa y la propia nebulosa. Como suele suceder , el cúmulo fue descubierto primero por Flamsteed hacia 1680 y la nebulosa la descubrió Le Gentil, 67 años más tarde (1747).

En mayo de 1764, Charles Messier lo incluyó en su catálogo.

Está a una distancia estimada de unos 5.000 años luz con un diametro real de 140 x 60 años luz y su mg. es la 6.0, con lo cual se puede observar a simple vista con cielo oscuro.

Contiene la nebulosa unas estructura tipo glóbulos oscuros de materia que está colapsándose y que con el tiempo darán lugar a nuevas estrellas. En la parte central y más brillante hay una estrella de mg. 9.5 llamada Herschel 36 que es la principal causante de la iluminación de la nebulosa y con una edad estimada de unos 10.000 años se considera una de las estrellas más jovenes conocidas.

La fotografía se obtuvo desde Ayllón (Segovia) con el SC de 280m.m. a f 6.3 y la ST-8 XME en agosto de 2006. Los ratios de exposición LRGB fueron : 30:20:20:20 min.

M 8 or The Lagoon nebula consists of a very young open cluster ( Ngc 6530) which was formed from the nebula´s material and the nebula itself.The cluster was first discovered by J. Flamsteed in 1680 and the nebula by Le Gentil , 67 years later in 1747. Charles Messier included the object in his cataloge in may 1764.

The estimated distance is about 5.000 years light and the diameter 140 x 60 y.l. The visual magnitude is only 6.0 for which it should be a naked eye object under dark sky locations.

The nebula has some so-called "globules", a kind of dark material condensations which are collapsing and will give birth to new stars in the near future.

Located at the center and brightest part of the nebula lies mg. 9.5 star Herschel 36, which is the main source of high energy radiation that makes the nebula shine. It is supposed to be only 10.000 years old, being one of the youngest known stars in the sky.

The photograph was taken last august 2006 from Ayllón (Segovia). The set up consisted of the SCT 280 m.m. at f/6.3 + ST-8 XME.Total exposure time was 90 minutes and the LRGB ratios were: 30:20:20:20 min.
