This image was captured in the Adraga´s beach, in Sintra, Portugal. Here we can see a lots of dust and gas from our Milky Way Galaxy, (even without being the right month to show it up, from Portugal) as well as many nebulas, like North America Nebula, in the right corner of the image. Now more easy to capture it, thanks to new Canon EOS60Da, without the infrared filter, is a DSLR totally dedicated to this kind of images

After the sunset, the sky takes fantastic colors and warm tones full of life. While waiting for the night fall to become the visible clouds of dust and gas in our galaxy, I registered a startrail a little different than usual, where are clearly distinguishable the different colors of different stars. In astronomy, the yellow/orange stars are more cold than the white/blue stars. A curiosity, is that the track nearest the rock and water, in the left area of the image, refers to the planet Mars, who was also visible when I started the session. In the atlantic ocean, the waves dragged the foam that was drawing the sand and reflecting a magnificent sky full of light and color .

This image was captured in the Adraga´s beach, in Sintra, Portugal, where we could see a delicate silhouette of the Sintra´s mountain, and above it, the great Auriga constellation, as well as Taurus and near Aldebaran star, (at left side) the planet Jupiter shinning. Above it, in Taurus constellation, are clearly visible the great star cluster, Pleiades (M45).

After the sunset, sometimes the sky takes fantastic colors with blue tones, rose or violet. In this image taken in the Adraga´s beach, in Sintra, besides the rocks, and the Atlantic Ocean, some parts of the Milky Way and stars seem to show up in a lovely moment that don´t seems to be nor either night or day.

This image was captured in the land of Juromenha, near Alandroal, one of the regions covered by the Alqueva´s Dark Sky Reserve (www.alquevadarksky.com), distinguished as the Worlds First Star Light Tourism Destination. The image reveals two bright stars of the summer triangle (Altair and Vega) low in the West horizon, just about 3 hours after the sunset, as a reminder that the summer is going away until the next year. The low clouds are also reforcing this idea, fortunately, we still could watch the Milky Way as a background layer with another kind of nebulosity, with a lots of dust, gas and star clusters. In the foreground, making a dramatic and contrasting view, are two great olive trees, the tree that really represents the landscape of Alentejo, in Portugal.

These images were the result of my last expedition in the Dark Sky Reserve, more precisely, in Juromenha region, near Alandroal, one of the locations covered by the great Alqueva´s Dark Sky Reserve area and that has a very deep dark sky. However, during the two nights that I was shooting, I had the great presence of the moon to light up the landscape, creating many different blue sky tones and showing less stars than we usually see, with naked eye. The moon, let me capture the beauty of the place with incredible romantic views in a scenery full of quiet, peace and plenitude. Lakes, horses and millenar olive trees, is just an example of what we could find there...Enjoy the trip through my images!

Covering 3000sq km in southern Portugal the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve is the first area in the world to be internationally certified as a Starlight Tourism Destination by the Starlight Foundation.

Its low level latitude (38 deg N), minimal light pollution and impressively clear skies provide the astronomy beginner and the expert with unparalleled opportunities to explore the magic and mystery of the night sky.

For the beginner the clarity of the night sky (average of 250 clear nights a year) makes it easier to recognise all the constellations, identify the stars and even spot some deep sky objects with the naked eye. Telescopes and binoculars are also available at key locations to enhance the visual experience and expert guides are on hand to provide information and advice.

Teaching my father where to point the binoculars to find the moon, at the same time, both of us we were enjoying a quiet night of sky observations and photography. What a great moment!

The castle of Almourol is one of the more emblematic and cenographic medieval military monuments of the reconquest, and the best representation of the influence of the Knights Templar in Portugal. Located on a small islet in the middle of the Tagus River, in Vila Nova da Barquinha, in the centre region of the country. The castle was conquered in 1129 and it was part of the defensive line controlled by the Knights Templar, and a stronghold used during the Portuguese reconquest.

In the scene, at right, is visible the strong path of planet Venus, also reflected in the calm water of the river.

The Roman Temple of Évora (Portuguese: Templo romano de Évora), also referred to as the Temple of Diana (Diana, was the ancient Roman goddess of the moon, the hunt, and chastity) is an ancient temple in the Portuguese city of Évora.Specialists believe that the temple as been constructed around the first century A.D. in homage to Augustus who was venerated as a god during and after his rule. The temple is part of the historical centre of the city, which was included in the classification by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.It represents one of the most significant landmarks relating to the Roman and Lusitania civilizations of Évora, in Portuguese territory. In the sky we could see the path of the Moon and above it, the bright trail of planet Mars.

Full Moon behind the Cathedral of Évora situated in the historical centre of the city, which was included in the classification by UNESCO, as a World Heritage Site.

Image obtained in Portinho Arrábida, Portugal, during a practice session of a workshop of astrophotography that I drove for about 15 students on February 17, 2012. While in the beach is possible to see many lights of different colors due to the constant movement of the photographers along the sand, in the sky, above the slope of Arrábida, facing to Southwest West, you can see the trails of well known stars as Sirius, Procyon or Betelgeuse and constellations like Canis Major and Minor, Orion or Taurus.

In this image obtained in the nautical twilight, from Almada, Portugal, we can see at left, the path of planet Venus and a few degrees of the Moon, more precisely on it´s left, the path of the planet Jupiter. The photography sequence is the result of the sum of 111 images at intervals of 3 minutes between each, and for about 5 hours, from 18h45 until 00h13, when the moon disappears behind the city buildings.

Label Identification.

In this image taken in the middle of the Sintra hills, we can see through the branches of trees many stars, below left, the bright star is the planet jupiter, in the same vertical line, near the top left, we find the pleiades and in the oposite location, in the right corner of the image, the Polaris Star. Near the horizon, the orange bright lights come from Sintra´s Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture.

This image was taken in the Serra de Sintra, above the solar wall, a rock with about 30 meters in height, situated in the top of the mountain in the back of Sintra´s Castle and near the Pena´s Palace, where climbers usually do climbing and rappelling. Near the horizon we could see the dramatic effect of light pollution, but also, the beauty of Sintra Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture.

This amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean against the Rocky cliffs from Cabo Espichel, was only possible to be photographed during the night, due, to the strong light of the Moon that was almost full and could Light up all the dramatic and beatiful scene. In the sky, during two hours I could register the path of the brightest star in the celestial sphere ( Sirius), that is visible in the middle of image. The light of the moon like a trick of magic turned the night in day, with the sky staying blue. The white clouds near the horizon gave the last fine touch, in this quite and peaceful scene.

In this lovely night after Christmas, Me and my old friend José Formiga went outside to watch a great conjunction between our crescent Moon and planet Venus. To enjoy the show, we choose a small pine forest at Fonte-de-Telha, facing to the Atlantic Ocean. At left, I point to Venus, at my right, José point his finger to the Moon.

In this Moon lapse video image, we could see the Crescent Moon in the Sagittarius constellation, while it was setting behind the horizon. The Moon shows a strong Earthshine effect, for being just 9% directly iluminated by the Sun. As we watch the moonset, we notice that by the influence of the the Moon gravity, the tide goes down. The time lapse was taken in Costa da Caparica beach, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Sequence of 319 images, each one of 10 seconds. 27/11/2011

In the image we could see the Crescent Moon in the Sagittarius constellation, and below them, 3º above the horizon, the planet Venus. This image was taken about 30km away from Lisbon, 300 meters high in the Arrábida mountain Range, facing the North-west. In the image we could see the huge amount of light pollution coming from the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, as well a lot of air trafic. But above the sky, there are persistent stars and constellations, that still shine in the orange sky. Are they: Aquila, Delphinus, Sagitta, Vulpecula, Cygnus, Lyra, Draco, Ursa Minor. The main path at the left edge is the Altair star. Near the horizon in the middle of the image we could see the Vega star and above it, the Deneb path. In the right top corner, is clearly visible the trail of Pherkad e Kocab, from Ursa Minor, with his curve path for being near the Polaris

Imagem obtida num pinhal da Fonte-de-Telha, na noite da aula prática do workshop que dirigi em 1 de Outubro de 2011, intitulado Astrofotografia e Paisagem Nocturna. O rasto mais brilhante ao centro da imagem é o planeta Júpiter e logo atrás à esquerda, o rasto das Pleiades (M45). Soma de 230 imagens cada uma de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 115 minutos. Imagem obtida entre as 00h42 e as 2h42, de 02-10-2011.

Imagem do rasto da Lua obtido~no Alentejo, em Vila Boim, Elvas. Na imagem e possível ver o rasto da Lua em cima e à direita o rasto das Pleiades. No centro da imagem é visível o rasto de Orion e logo abaixo o rasto intenso de Sírius. Sensivelmente ao nível da Lua mas no extremo superior direito da imagem, podemos ver o forte rasto do planeta Júpiter por entre os ramos da árvore. Foi feita uma soma de 90 imagens perto do nascer do dia entre as 05h26 e as 06h14 de 20-09-2011. Cada imagem de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 45 minutos.

Imagem do rasto da Lua obtido Alentejo, em Vila Boim, Elvas, numa longa exposição de 4 horas seguidas. A imagem foi obtida na região Este/Nordeste do céu. Foi feita uma soma de 451 imagens entre as 23h36 e as 03h44 de 18-09-2011. Cada imagem de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 226 minutos. Na imagem é possível ver o forte rasto da lua em quarto minguante e logo abaixo da lua no canto superior o rasto do planeta Júpiter. No canto inferior direito são visíveis as estrelas de Orion. Em geral, são visíveis as constelações de: Andromeda, Perseus, Triangulum, Aries, Camelopardalis, Gemini, Auriga, Taurus e o rasto do planeta Marte, que se mistura no intenso brilho deixado pelo rasto da lua.

Imagem do rasto de estrelas obtido Alentejo, em Vila Boim, Elvas, numa longa exposição de 5 horas seguidas. A imagem foi obtida na região sudoeste do céu.Para obter este resultado foi feita uma soma de 550 imagens entre as 23h31 e as 04h33 de 19-09-2011. Cada imagem de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 275 minutos. Na imagem à esquerda, o rasto mais evidente é da estrela Fomalhaut, da constelação Piscis Austrinus. é ainda possível ver rastos de outras constelações como: Aquila, Scutum, Sagittarius, Scutum, Aquarius, Capricornus, Microscopium, Ophiuchus.

Panorâmica do nascer da Lua Cheia no momento em que esta se encontrava no perigeu, ou seja, na zona orbital mais próxima do planeta Terra. Esta foi a maior Lua cheia dos últimos cerca de 20 anos, 14% maior e 30% mais brilhante. As imagens foram obtidas no Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra, em 19-03-2011.

Rastos de estrelas como chuva caindo sobre um pequeno pinhal na Fonte-de-Telha. Imagem obtida na noite das Perseidas em 13-08-2011 entre as 00h14 e a 01h23. Soma de 75 imagens alternadas cada uma de 25 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 31 minutos. São visiveis diversas constelações como Cepheus, Cassiopeia, Perseus, Andromeda, Pegasus e o planeta Júpiter.

São visiveis diversas estrelas como Spica, Porrima, Denebola, Vindemiatrix, Alula Australis e Borealis e o Planeta Saturno.

Rotação das estrelas que circundam a região da estrela polar, registado no Alentejo, em Vila Boim, em 1-07-2011 entre as 00h53 e as 04h41. Soma de 420 imagens cada uma de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 3h30 minutos. São visíveis as distintas cores das estrelas de várias constelações tais como: Ursa Menor, Ursa Maior, Canes Venatici, Draco, Cepheus, Camelopardalis e ainda de Cassiopeia. Em baixo à direita imagem legendada com as principais constelações.

Imagem da Via Láctea vista nos céus do Alentejo, em Vila Boim, Elvas. A imagem foi obtida na região sul do céu. Ao centro da imagem é possível ver a Via láctea e simultaneamente o rasto das estrelas que a compõem, descrevendo assim o movimento da esfera celeste ao longo da noite. Para obter este resultado foi feita uma soma de 398 imagens entre as 00h40 e as 04h25 de 30-06-2011. Cada imagem de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 3h19 minutos. Na imagem é possível ver diversas constelações como: Lyra, Aquila, Scutum, Sagittarius, Scorpius, Aquarius, Capricornus.

Eclipse Total da Lua, visto a partir do Portinho da Arrábida. Em Portugal, a lua já nasceu eclipsada e na fase da totalidade, sendo possível ver a mudança de tom no rasto à medida que a Lua sai do cone de sombra da Terra, até ao termino do Eclipse. 15-06-2011 entre as 21h43 e as 22h49. Soma de 357 imagens cada uma de 10 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 59.5 minutos.

Imagem do rasto da Lua a pôr-se ao pé da grande Antena de 70 metros da TDT - Televisão Digital Terrestre, localizada em Monsanto. Podem ainda ver-se os rastos de diversas estrelas, como é o caso de Regulus, à direita da Lua. À esquerda em cima, o rasto do planeta Saturno e da estrela Porrima, e no canto superior direito, o rasto de algumas estrelas da Ursa Maior. Imagem obtida em 11-05-2011 entre as 23h36 e a 01h11. Soma de 263 imagens cada uma de 20 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 88 minutos.

I made this sequence of images, in the night of the "Global Star Party"2011, in one of the most beautiful astronomical heritage of the world, the historic Astronomical Observatory of Lisbon. Above the front building, we can see the trails of Ursa Major, and in the image of the right side building, we can see the trail of moonset as well as the Gemini stars, Pollux and Castor, and behind the yellow main dome, the Menkalinan and Capella stars, from Auriga constellation. It was a great challange photographing the beauty of the place, against the high level of light pollution, in the midle of Lisbon. I made 3 separated images and also a composed image with all of 3 diferent views, in a portrait and landscape version. All the images were taken in the same night 09-04-2011 between 23:34 and 2:11. Lua Crescente com o disco apenas 1% iluminado. Imagem obtida nos Capuchos, em Almada. É possível ver ainda a Costa da Caparica e parte de Lisboa, assim como do Oceano Atlântico.

This night time lapse photography was made during the Vernal Equinox, March 20, 2011. While the Pleiades, Orion and Sirius star, were getting down behind the Arrábida moutain range, in Portugal, the biggest Moon of the last 18 years was moving in the sky, iluminating all the scene and making a slow motion movement in the rock shadows on the sand. The Moon was also drawing the water from the Atlantic Ocean, due to gravity is noticeable the incoming tide at the end of the video, that was made between 21h30 and 01h00. Imagens de uma Super Lua Cheia no momento em que esta se encontrava no perigeu, ou seja, na zona orbital mais próxima do planeta Terra. Esta é a maior Lua cheia dos últimos cerca de 20 anos, 14% maior e 30% mais brilhante. As imagens foram obtidas no Farol e região do Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra, em 19-03-2011.

In this Time Lapse Photography taken during the night at 15-03-11 between 22h32 and 01h31, in Fonte-de-Telha, Portugal, in a small pine forest near the Atlantic Ocean, we could apreciate the motion of many stars from Pleiades and Perseus Constellation, as well as, Castor and Pollux, Procyon and even Regulus. The bright light of the Moon is well visible in the end of the movie. It is also impressive the the dynamic motion in diferent layers of clouds in formation.

Imagem do rasto das estrelas na região sudoeste do céu, obtida no Parque da Paz, um refúgio da natureza localizado no meio da cidade de Almada. Imagem obtida em 27-02-2011 entre as 22h22 e as 00h29. Soma de 234 imagens cada uma de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 117 minutos.

Imagens da Lua na fase quase cheia, iluminando as paisagens com uma luz tão intensa que quase parece de dia. Na imagem vertical obtida num pinhal na Fonte-de-Telha podemos ver algumas estrelas brilhantes por entre os ramos de um pinheiro, destacando a Estrela Sírius e a constelação de Orion, totalmente visivel ao centro da imagem e por entre os ramos do pinheiro. Na imagem Horizontal à direita, é possível observar uma bonita formação de nuvens e à esquerda são visíveis as Pleiades. Na imagem em baixo é possível ver um Halo Lunar parcial, no topo da imagem, devido à refracção da luz em pequenos cristais de gelo presentes na atmosfera.

Imagem da Lua em fase Crescente, com apenas 3% do disco iluminado e onde é visível um forte Earthshine lunar, tornando visível a parte da Lua que nesta fase não se encontra directamente exposta aos raios solares, mas que se torna visível devido à luz reflectida na sua superfície, pelo próprio planeta Terra, que ilumina assim a parte escura da Lua, claramente visível, nesta imagem obtida no Feijó, Almada, em 04-02-2011 às 18h50.

Sirius e a Constelação de Orion por detrás da Torre de Belém, em Lisboa. Imagem obtida em noite de Lua Cheia, a 20-01-2011 entre as 01h47 e as 02h20. Soma de 62 imagens cada uma de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 32 minutos.

Imagem do rasto da Lua a pôr-se por detrás da Serra da Arrábida, em 11-01-2011 entre as 22h54 e as 00h17. Soma de 154 imagens cada uma de 30 segundos, totalizando uma integração de 77 minutos. São visíveis várias estrelas das constelações: Andrómeda, Peixes, Baleia, Carneiro, Cassiopeia à direita e ao centro no topo, as Pleiades M45.
