About this Object

This type Sc spiral galaxy in Ursa major was discovered by Pierre Méchain on March 27, 1781.
M 101 lies at a distance of approximately 24 million light years with a magnitude listed 7.9. Although extended 22 arc minutes on photos and quite bright, only the central region of this galaxy is visible in smaller telescopes.
