equipment

In the course of two years, our equipment have suffered an incredible revolution. We have begun with a Newton 200 f/5 on a HEQ5 non GoTo mount and a Meade DSI CCD camera. After that, we have replaced the camera with a Canon 350D, the optical tube a couple of times and the mount.

By the time we are writing this web, our imaging camera is an Artemis CCD camera, that together with different optical tubes cover a wide range of focal lenghts giving different  resolutions.  Our main configurations are:

  •  Megrez 72  + WO flattener III 0.8x  at f/4.8. This configuration has a focal length of 346 mm, which covers a field of view of 151'x151' at a resolution of 4.41''/pix

  • Vixen R200SS DG f/4 reflector with Televue Paracorr coma corrector. With a focal lenght of 800 mm at a resolution of 1.91''/px it covers  a field of view 65'x65'

  • Vixen VC200L (Visac) at f/6.4. At a focal length of 1278mm, it covers a field of view of 41'x41' with a resolution of 1.19''/px

In all cases, optical tubes are mounted on Vixen Sphinx Deluxe mount. The guiding system we use is composed by a William Optics Zenithstar Z66 f/5.9 scope mounted in parallel with the main tube. The Meade DSI CCD camera is used together with PhD guiding software for autoguiding the system.

We have not a fixed observational place. By now we have five more or less usual places for taking photos, so depending on the weather conditions we choose one or another. All places are located near Barcelona city so they are affected in some degree by light pollution. These places are:

  • Viladecavalls (41º33'N and 1º57'E) - These are the geographical coordinates  of our home, at a small town in the neighbourhood of Terrassa city. The sky is light polluted, and in the last years urban construction has made of the center of the town a very illuminated place. Anyway, the advantage of this place is that we are in home, so we can imaging everyday if possible.

  • Km 24 (41º44' N and 1º58'E)- It is actually placed at the km 24 of Matadepera-Talamanca (Barcelona) highway. The sky is moderately light polluted (mainly south and south-east) and very humid during autum and summer.

  • "Explanada del Pozo" at Montseny Natural Park (41º45'N and 2º27'E) - The sky is also moderately polluted (specially south-west horizon) but at autum and winter we can go there without humidity.

  • "Pla de la Calma" at Montseny Natural Park (41º47'N and 2º20'E) - Located at 1200m, the sky is also slightly light polluted, but it has a 360º visibility.

  • The last but not the least, Rassos de Peguera ski station (42º8'N and 1º45'E). It is located at 1900 m over sea level. The sky quality is the best of all places, it is only slightly polluted at south horizon. However, at winter highway is dangerous due to snow.
