Description:
It is a nearby spiral galaxy located in Ursa Major. It has several extremely luminous star-forming (H II) regions in the outer spiral arms.
Measurement with Cepheid variables has determined its distance at about 27 light years from us.
Although it is a very bright deep sky object, as it spans over 22'' it looks as a very dim object through small telescopes. On photographs it exhibit a prominent unsimmetry.
