Wine merchant who migrated in Australia, he got interested in astronomy and started publishing works on perturbations in Mars' and Venus' orbits. Invited by David GILL at the Cape Observatory in 1894, he became a successful double star observer with the 7-inch refractor (1628 discoveries) and found during his sweeps some nebulae included in the IC2 ("Monthly Notices").
