STEPHAN;
Edouard JM.; 1837-1923; FRA
Astronomer at Marseille's Observatory, Stephan tried in 1873 to follow FIZEAU's idea: interferometric measurements of stellar sizes, but the 31-inch telescope of the observatory only proved that stellar diameters were inferior to 0.16 arcsecond. But Stephan is well known for hos discoveries of nebulae included in the NGC ("Stephan's quintet, a group of galaxies by example) and precise position measurements.
