Son of William, he directed Harvard Observatory and was a remarkable planetary and cometary photographer. He made 16 discoveries of nebulae (7 true objects) along with SAFFORD and COOLIDGE thanks to a 15-inch refractor ("List of New Nebulae and Star Clusters found at Harvard College Observatory" ,1863).
