His ultraviolet studies lead Bowen to identify the origins of the principal nebular lines in diffuse and planetary nebulae (the ex-nebulium of HUGGINS): the forbidden lines of ionized oxygen. He directed Mont Wilson and Palomar observatories from 1948 to 1964.
