DREYER; John L.E; 1852-1926; DAN/GBR

After having worked for Lord ROSSE at Birr Castle, Dreyer became director of Armagh Observatory in 1882 where he worked with a 10-inch refractor. He compiled between 1888 and 1908 the "New General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars" (7840 objects), and the "Index Catalogues" (5386 objects), gathering all nebulae known at the time. The NGC was published in the "Memoirs of the Royal Astronomical Society", the IC1 in 1894 and the IC2 in 1908.
