FLAMSTEED; John; 1646-1720; GBR

He convinced Charles II to institude a royal observatory (constructed at Greenwich in 1676) and was named at his head (royal astronomer was not the official term yet). He invented a conic projection that allowed him to obtain flat charts from his celestial observations. He published his 3000 stars catalogue partly in 1712 ("Historia Coelestis Britannica") and completely in 1725. This last edition contained some nebulous objects (3 personnal discoveries). He never got along with his successor and a friend of the latter: HALLEY and NEWTON.
