Since 1966, the HBG longwave transmitter in Prangins
has diffused at 75 kHz the official time signals synchronised to
Universal Time Coordinated. In addition to second pulses, coded
information giving the time of day and the date are also sent. The
precise carrier frequency of 75 kHz, synchronised by an atomic clock,
and the time markers, can be used for the verification of frequency
standards and time control purposes.
The transmitter transmits non-stop around the
clock. The time signals are available free of charge to all users.
METAS, as the responsible body for the realisation and diffusion
of the official timescale in Switzerland, has taken over the transmitter
on 1st June 2000 and is in charge of it since then.
