Cometas_Obs
RECOMENDATIONS FOR OBSERVERS

If you are an observer and you want to contribute with your measurements, we will be delighted to receive them. Due to practical reasons your sendings must fulfill some requirements in order to make updates easier.

Please, read carefully the following instructions.

VISUAL OBSERVERS

In order to facilitate data-processing, we have developed the "Cometas_Obs" format. At this site you will find the program that will allow you to convert your observations to that format.

One of the most important aspects to bear in mind is the "observer code". This code is internally used by the list and facilitates the observations processing and their inclusion in the site. The first time you send observations the program will assign the XXX code, which is the one you must send. After your first sending, you will receive a personal code, you must introduce that code in the program so the program will record it. That very same code will be used in following sendings.

CCD OBSERVERS

After an intense debate and with the aim of homogeneize the photometric measurements and facilitate its later analysis, when we started running this list we chose to use an (approx) 10x10 sec.arc or 100 sec.arc^surface 2 photometric box. At this link you can check an article that describes the reasons of the aforementioned choice and also the results obtained in the analysis of some already studied comets. We ask you to adjust your photometric box to these figures so your measurements will fit into the 10x10 method. We use Usno-R catalog reference stars.

Most of Obs_Comets observers also send their measurements to the MPC so we have decided to use this format as well. MPC gives its observers an observatory code, we use the same code to identify the measurements. However, if you want to send data and you do not have an MPC code, the first time you send something you can use the XXX code. We will give you then a personal code we will use to upload your observations.

MPC format supports both astrometric and photometric measurements. However, if you only want to send fotometry you can use the program we have developed in order to facilitate sendinds.

ICQ FORMAT

Although we use the aforementioned formats if you are an ICQ user you can send ICQ measurements (both visual or CCD). We will convert them in order to upload them.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

In "Cometas_Obs" we want both the list and the light curves site to be welcoming spaces to all the interested people in the amazing world of comets. You are free to join us.

Please, feel free to consult anything you need.

We appreciate your collaboration sending your observations.
