Here are some of the images of the Total Solar Eclipse that take place at midday of august 11.

Elaborations of the Corona

 This elaboration make visible what can be viewed with a binocular: the Corona is visible from the edge of the Moon to the borders, the prominences are of a very strong red.

This image was obtained in this way:

  • sum of 12 images, with exposures of 3s, 1s, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000 (scanned with a 2700dpi with a film scanner). The sum was done either in Photoshop 5.0 (8 bit each RGB channel) and Qmips v1.8 (16 bit gray);
  • elaboration with a rotational gradient of 1.5 and 10 degrees using Qmips;
  • the three images were added for making visible the fine and big details using the "overlay" option in the layers of PS;
  • adding the red prominences.
Note: the outer Corona is not visible due to the soft clouds that filtered the light.
Another elaboration of the Corona: here only the big details are visible. It was obtained in a similar manner than the upper image:
  • sum of 11 images with exposures from 3 seconds to 1/500 s, using Qmips v1.8;
  • then I made three elaboration with the rotational gradient filter (2.5, 5 and 7.5 degree), then I sum them in one image;
  • union of the sum and the gradient with Photoshop 5, using the "multiply" function of the layers;
  • false colour visualization (blue);
  • adding of the red prominences.

 All the images has been used to form this image of the whole eclipse.

The sequence
 Only and image for describing the entire eclipse. The Sun and the Moon were images every 5 minutes. The last part of the eclipse is not visible due to the clouds.

Temperature Data
 For alle the time of the eclipse (and more), I measured the temperature every quarter of an hour with an alcohol termometer holded in shade and at about 1 meter from the ground. The precision is about of 0,5°C.

The result is a decrease of 7°C of the temperature!

Because of many request, I wrote here some notes about buying my photos: The cost for a 10x15cm (4x6inch) print is 2$, for a 20x30cm (8x12inch) print is 5$, then you have to add the cost of the expedition (variable with the format and number of the photos, about 3$ for some 20x30cm (8x12inch) prints). The payment must be anticipated and could be done with a not negotiable check. Note that I live in Italy.
