I had a set of Losmandy rings for the 80mm that worked great for holding the scope on the LX, but were not what I would call adjustable, other than by using the screws which hold the scope in place. Several times the scope slipped and was saved by the objective cell snagging on the screws. THe ETX has no objective cell, and so would slip right through the rings.
I wanted the ETX to be adjustable. In fact I wanted the ETX to be motorized. Push a button and move it around. I built a mount for it that is made from only stock materials, cut to length. It is rigid enough to hold the ETX in place, and adjustment is as smooth as silk. I have knobs on the ends of the drive screws, because the controller isnīt wired up yet, and the knobs work very well.
If I am going to be looking through the eyepiece of the ETX while adjusting the position, the motors donīt make a lot of sense. Perhaps if I am looking at the guider screen while looking for a star, the motors will be more useful. As it is, they do make great bearings for the end of the screw. |
