Piccolomini est un cratère de 88 Km et profond de 4500 m situé dans le secteur Sud-est de la lune sur le plateau continental dans le prolongement méridional de Rupes Altaï. Au sud de Piccolomini, on trouve le cratère Stiborius (45 Km, 3700m). La muraille  élevée  du  cratère n'a pas été usée par des impacts de cratère, et le mur intérieur possède de larges terrasses.  Le mur Sud a subit des éboulements très probablement induits par activité sismique. Le plancher du cratère est relativement lisse, avec seulement des collines et des craterlets. Au point médian d’une immense crête centrale complexe part une fissure qui va aux éboulements du Sud.

Piccolomini is a prominent lunar impact crater located in the southeastern sector of the Moon. Rothmann crater lies to the west-southwest, and to the south is Stiborius crater. The lengthy Rupes Altai begins at the western rim of Piccolomini crater, curving to the northwest.

The crater rim has not been severely worn by crater impacts, and the inner wall possesses wide terraces. These structures have been somewhat smoothed by landslips and erosion, most likely induced by seismic activity. An influx of material has entered across the northern rim, flowing down toward the base. The crater floor is relatively smooth, with only minor hills and impact craters. In the middle is a complex central peak surrounded by lesser mounts. The main peak rises to a height of 2.0 kilometers above the surrounding floor.
