Stadius est le reste fantomatique d'un cratère de 70 Km qui a été presque effacé par écoulement de lave. Il se situe au sud-ouest du cratère beaucoup plus jeune Eratosthenes (58 Km), au bord Nord de la Mer des îles (Mare Insularum) où la mer rejoint le Golfe Torride (sinus Aestuum). À l'ouest on trouve le cratère Copernic, et les cratères secondaires multiples de l'éjecta de Copernic couvrent ce domaine. Au Nord-ouest on trouve une chaîne de cratères qui continuent dans une formation linéaire jusqu'à atteindre la Mer des Pluies (Mare Imbrium). Seul la muraille Nord-ouest, qui culmine à 650 m, du cratère Stadius reste presque intacte, et elle se joint à une ligne d'arête qui atteint le rempart occidental du cratère Eratosthenes. Le reste de la formation forme une trace fantomatique de la muraille originelle, créée de quelques élévations de la surface. Le plancher plat du cratère est grêlé par des craterlets.

Stadius is a ghostly remnant of an ancient lunar crater that has been nearly obliterated by basaltic lava flow. It lies to the southwest of the much younger Eratosthenes crater, at the north edge of Mare Insularum where the mare joins Sinus Aestuum. To the west is the prominent Copernicus crater, and multiple secondary craters from the Copernican ejecta cover this area. To the northwest is a chain of craters that continue in a roughly linear formation until reaching Mare Imbrium.

Only the northwestern rim of Stadius crater remains nearly intact, and it joins with a north-running ridge line that reaches the western rampart of Eratosthenes crater. The remainder of the formation forms a ghostly trace of the original rim, created from a few rises in the surface, and there is no indication of a central peak. The flat crater floor is pock-marked by craterlets.
