Hydra represent the multiheaded serpent killed by Hercules. The association between those two constellations predates Hercules, however, and came from Mesopotamia. Slaying of a multiheaded snake by Ninurta, the god of war, was mentioned on a cuneiform tablet from 2400 B.C.


M83 is my favourite deep sky target in Hydra.
