M109 = NGC3992 ( 11h 57.6m +53°23´, 9.8 mag. )


This beautiful barred spiral galaxy in Ursa Major was discovered by Mechain on February 16, 1781. It is located approximately 55 million ly away and can be spotted through a telescope 38' SEE of g Ursae Majoris (see finder chart below).

The above image was taken on February 23, 2001 from Harrowsmith, Ontario. Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 f6.3 telescope autoguided with Cookbook 211 LDC CCD camera on piggybacked 500mm f8 telephoto lens. Ten white integrations (240 sec. each) were processed with AIP4WIN.

North is to the right.
