M26 = NGC6694 ( 18h 45.2m -9°24´, 8.0 mag. )


This open star cluster in Scutum was noticed by LeGentil prior to 1750 and Messier observed it on June 20, 1764. This group of approximately 100 stars measures 15 ly across and is located about 5,000 ly away. M26 is visible in binoculars about 2°45' SEE of a Scuti (see finder chart below).

The above image was taken on August 8, 1997 from Sooke, BC. Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 f6.3 telescope. Ten unfiltered integrations (30 sec. each) were combined using Multi245.

North is to the right.
