M49 = NGC4472 ( 12h 29.8m +8°00´, 8.4 mag. )


This giant eliptical galaxy in Virgo is one of the major members in Virgo Galaxy Cluster and was discovered by Messier on February 19, 1771. Several faint galaxies are visible around M49. To find M49, star-hop about 3°40' SW of r Virginis (see Virgo Cluster Map and the detailed chart below).

The above image was taken on May 29, 1998 from Sooke, BC. Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 f6.3 telescope autoguided with Cookbook 211 LDC CCD camera on piggybacked 500mm f8 telephoto lens. Three white integrations (240 sec. each) were processed with AIP4WIN.
