M50 = NGC2323 ( 7h 03.2m -8°20´, 5.9 mag. )
This open star cluster in Monoceros was discovered by Cassini before 1711. Messier observed it on April 5, 1772. It is located about 3,300 ly away and can be easily spotted in binoculars about 4° S of 19 Monocerotis (see finder chart below). Large and faint Seagull Nebula lies 2°30' further SSE.
M50 image represents autoguided 20 minute exposure on Ektachrome P1600 taken on February 19, 1999 with Ultima 8 f6.3 SCT from Sooke, BC.
