Maffei I Galaxy in Cassiopeia

(RA 2h 36.3m , Dec. +59°39', 14 mag., 5 x 3 arcmin.)

This large galaxy is heavily obscured by the Milky Way. It is located 3°15' NE of Double Cluster (see finder chart below). Nebular complexes IC1805 and IC1848 can be noticed nearby as well. Maffei II galaxy accompanies Maffei I 40' E. Together with a number of other galaxies hiding behind Milky Way in this area (including IC342) they form a distinct group - the closest neighbours of our own Local Group.

The above image was taken on January 3, 2002 from Harrowsmith , Ontario using Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera on Celestron Ultima 8 f6.3 telescope, autoguided with Cookbook 211 LDC camera on a piggybacked 500mm f8 telephoto lens. It is composed of eleven white exposures (240 sec. each) processed with AIP4WIN.
