NGC1300 in Eridanus

(RA 3h 19.7m , Dec. -19° 25', 10.4 mag., 5.5 x 2.9 arcmin.)


This is one of the most perfect examples of barred spiral. This bright galaxy is easy to find about 2°20' N of t4 Eridani (see finder chart below). A faint spiral galaxy NGC1297 is located 20' NNW (near the right edge of the image).

The above image was taken on December 20, 2000 from Harrowsmith, Ontario. Cookbook 245 LDC camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 SCT with f3.0 focal reducer. Unguided white exposures (22 x 60 sec.) were combined using AIP4WIN.

North is to the right.


Below is a closeup of NGC1300 taken on February 2, 2002 from Harrowsmith, Ontario. Cookbook 245 LDC camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 f6.3 SCT autoguided with Cookbook 211 on a piggybacked 500mm f8 telephoto lens. Seven white exposures (240 sec. each) were combined using AIP4WIN software.

North is to the left.
