Thor's Helmet or Duck Nebula (NGC2359) in Canis Major

(RA 7h 18.6m , Dec. -13° 12', 9 x 6 arcmin.)

This Wolf-Rayet nebula is located in NE corner of Canis Major about 4°20' NE of g Canis Majoris (see finder chart below). Other examples of such nebulae created by such massive stars are NGC6888 in Cygnus and NGC7635 in Cassiopeia.

The image above was taken on February 23, 2001 from Harrowsmith, Ontario. Cookbook 245 LDC camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 SCT with f6.3 focal reducer. Telescope was autoguided with Cookbook 211 LDC camera on a piggybacked 500mm f8 telephoto lens. White exposures (5 x 240 sec.) were combined using AIP4WIN.

North is to the right.
