NGC253 Galaxy in Sculptor
(RA 0h 47.6m , Dec. -25°17', 7.6 mag., 30' x 7')
This is the brightest member of Sculptor Galaxy Group (8 million ly away). While easily noticable in binoculars about 4°45' NW of a Sculptoris (see finder chart below) it was somehow missed by Messier.
The above image was taken on December 28, 2000 from Harrowsmith, Ontario. Target was low over southern horizon and increasing fog interfered with imaging. Cookbook 245 LDC camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 SCT with f3.0 focal reducer. Eight white exposures (60 sec. each) were combined using AIP4WIN.
North is to the right.
Map created in Guide 7.0 - 7°45' x 7°45'. North is up.
