Palomar 5 Globular Cluster in Serpens Caput

(RA 15h 16.1m , Dec. -0°07', 11.7 mag., 10.3 arcmin.)


This large and extremely faint globular is located about 3° SSW of spectacular M5 (see finder chart below). It's "brightest" stars are so dim that they are barely noticable in the above negative image!

That image was taken on September 5, 2002 from Harrowsmith, Ontario. Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera was used on Ultima 8 f6.3 telescope autoguided with Cookbook 211 LDC CCD camera on a piggybacked 500mm f8 telephoto lens. Ten white exposures (240 sec. each) were combined with AIP4WIN.

North is up.
