Pyxis, the Compases, was carved by Lacaille in 1750s out of the mast of Argo Navis in which Argonauts traveled for Golden Fleece. In 1750s, Lacaille divided that celestial vessel into Puppis (the Stern), Pyxis, Vela (the Sails) and Carina (the Keel).


NGC2613 is the brightest of galaxies in this southern constellation..
