r Ophiuchi Complex

This massive molecular cloud is detectable on photographs and consists of bright reflection nebulae IC4604 around r Ophiuchi, Sh2-9 around s Scorpii and IC4606 around Antares (a Scorpii, see finder chart below). Those nebulae have colours corresponding to their illuminating stars and and are separated by long streaks of dark nebulosity.

The above image was taken on May 13, 1996 from Texas Star Party near Fort Davis, TX. Piggybacked SLR camera with 135mm f2.8 telephoto lens was used for this 15 min. exposure on Ektachrome P1600 slide film.
