IC2944 The Running Chicken Nebula

Field centered on R.A. 11h 40' & Dec. -63° 20'

IC 2944 is a bright star forming region in Centaurus, 5,900 light-years away, a gaseous nebula that is in the process of being dispersed by the stars born within it. The tiny dark spots in the centre of the above picture are not photographic defects but an unusual type of interstellar cloud known as a Bok globule. Bok globules, named after astronomer Bart Bok who studied them extensively, are small dark clouds made of gas and dust that are typically condensing to form a star or stars.IC 2944 is a bright star forming region in Centaurus, 5,900 light-years away, a gaseous nebula that is in the process of being dispersed by the stars born within it.
