M46 & M47

Field centered on R.A. 07h 39' & Dec. -14° 30'

A nice field in Puppis, M46 is the rich cluster on the left while M47 is the one of the right with brighter members. Both clusters are about the size of the full Moon and well visible with unaided eye under dark skies. Another two interesting objects are visible in this image: the open cluster NGC2423 above M47 and the peculiar planetary nebula NGC2438 into M46 boundaries. This small nebula has a diameter of just 64" and shines with a magnitude of about 10. Click on M46 area to see an enlargement of the nebula (external pop-up window, image size 68KB).
