BIRT
Directory Section - 54
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The eastern part of Mare Nubium with many wrinkle ridges. Not far
from the crater Birt is Rupes Recta, the "straight fault", the most remarkable
fault on the Moon. When illuminated from the east it casts a wide shadow
which is clearly visible through even a small telescope. In the setting
Sun it resembles a fine white line. Larger telescopes reveal a cleft Rima
Birt between the craters Birt E (4.9x2.9 km/600 m) and Birt F (3.1 km/470
m). Refer to your copy of the Antonin Rukl lunar atlas chart, page 135.
