Transmission measured byPhilippe Rousselle
The IR70 is a longpass filter for near-IR
imaging of relatively dim objects in longer wavelenghts. It's
ideal for Jupiter and Saturn. The filter does transmit a residual
amount of deep red ligth visually, but with no visible effect on
CCD images. The filter is less interesting for Venus as light is
not a problem ; prefer filters from 800 to 1000 nm.
PROS
- Passes a very good amount of infrared light,
easy to use with relatively high frame rates
- Gives very good seeing and image sharpness
CONSll
- Limited loss of optical resolution
Mars
18 november 2005 - Mewlon 210 and Lumenera LU075M
Gives maximal contrast between dark and bright features.
The polar caps are dull. White clouds are not visible but
core dust clouds are bright

Saturn
27 february 2005 - Mewlon 210 and ATK-1HS
Gives better atmospheric penetration than red light.
Enhances some dark spots but the bright storm at 42°S
may disappear.

Jupiter
2 june 2006 - Mewlon 210 and Lumenera LU075M
Shows the main cloud layer at 1 bar level.
The global contrast is weak but the contrast of little
details is enhanced as the filter penetrates the last
hazes. The GRS is slightly bright, but brown or red low
pressures can disappear (as the NEB barges or the STB
dark spots).
Blue festoons in EZn are very dark.
