Leo represent Nemean Lion killed by Hercules as the first of his Twelve Labors. This zodiacal constellation was of course recognized long time before that connection was created - Babylonians already saw the Lion in the same star pattern.


a Leonis was given its modern name, Regulus , by Copernicus. The most striking telescopic view in Leo consists of the trio of galaxies M65, M66 and NGC3628.
