This sparse open cluster in Sagittarius was found by Messier on June 3, 1764. M18 is about 4,000 ly distant. It is visible in binoculars about 1° SSW of Swan Nebula (M17 - see finder chart below).

The above image was taken on July 9 and 13, 1999 from Sooke, BC. Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera was used on Ultima 8 f6.3 telescope. Nine white exposures (30 sec. each) as well as cyan, magenta and yellow-filtered integrations (5 x 30 sec., 4 x 30 sec. and 5 x 30 sec., respectively) were combined with AIP4WIN and adjusted in Lab color space using Corel PhotoPaint 8.
