M58 = NGC4579 ( 12h 37.7m +11°49´, 9.8 mag. )


This barred spiral galaxy in Virgo cluster was discovered by Messier on April 15, 1779. It measures about 94,000 ly across on it is 55 million ly distant. M58 is located 2°20' W of 34 Virginis (see Virgo Cluster Map and the detailed chart below). M59 and M60 are visible 1° E and 1°30' E, respectively, in the same low power field of view.

The above image was taken on March 20, 1999 from Sooke, BC. Cookbook 245 LDC CCD camera was used on Celestron Ultima 8 f6.3 telescope autoguided with Cookbook 211 LDC CCD camera on piggybacked 500mm f8 telephoto lens. Nine white integrations (240 sec. each) were processed with AIP4WIN.
