Puppis corresponds to the Stern of ancient constellation Argo Navis in which Argonauts traveled for Golden Fleece. In 1750s, Lacaille divided that celestial vessel into Puppis, Pyxis (the Compass), Vela (the Sails) and Carine (the Keel).

The most inspiring view in Puppis is offered by a pair of open clusters M46 and M47 which, at low power, fit into the same telescopic field of view.
